From a Young Boy’s Fascination to a Lifetime of Caps: My Story

Hello there. My name is Frank Hudson, and for most of my life, I’ve been known simply as the man behind Hudson’s Caps.

For more than five decades, I’ve had the privilege of crafting caps for men across the country — caps worn to first jobs, family gatherings, road trips, weddings, and quiet Sunday walks. All made in my workshop in Detroit, MI.

What started as a young boy’s fascination with craftsmanship slowly became my life’s work.

And now, as I prepare to retire, I want to share my story — and say thank you.

Where It All Began

I was eleven years old the first time I truly noticed a cap.

My father took me downtown to Eastern Market, the kind of place every kid from Detroit grows up knowing. Among the noise, the crates, and the cold morning air, one small stall stopped me. A man stood behind a wooden table, shaping a cap by hand, smoothing the fabric as if it were something fragile.

I stood there, frozen.

Seeing my curiosity, my father bought me that cap. It wasn’t fancy — wool, slightly oversized — but it felt like something important.

I kept it for years.

That was the moment I understood that a cap wasn’t just something you wore. It was identity. Tradition. Quiet confidence.

“The first cap I ever owned didn’t just sit on my head — it stayed with me.”

A Trip That Changed My Direction

When I was eighteen, I joined a school trip abroad.

While wandering through a narrow side street, I stepped into a small workshop where craftsmen were working by hand, shaping caps with tools worn smooth from years of use.

I stood there far longer than I planned, watching every movement.

That visit made something clear to me: One day, I wanted a place of my own — a shop where craftsmanship mattered more than speed.

Opening Hudson’s Caps

In the late sixties, after years of saving and learning, I opened Hudson’s Caps.

The shop was small, tucked away on a quiet street.

I painted the walls myself, built the shelves, and placed every cap by hand.

Walking through the door that first morning, I felt like that same ten-year-old boy again — excited, nervous, and hopeful.

“Opening my shop felt like completing a dream that started in childhood.”

When Times Got Hard

Not every year was easy.

There were times when sales slowed, costs rose, and I questioned whether I could keep going.

I remember sitting alone in the shop after closing, surrounded by unsold caps, wondering if I had made the wrong choice.

But I always came back to the same reason I started: The craft. The customers. The promise I made to myself.

Little by little, I pushed forward.

“The hard years tested me — but they never broke my love for the craft.”

More Than a Store

Over the years, Hudson’s Caps became something I never expected.

Fathers brought sons. Friends stopped by just to talk. Travelers returned years later to buy the same model again.

Caps left my shop and became part of people’s lives — and somehow, so did I.

“Every cap carried a story. Every customer left one behind.”

Closing This Chapter

Now, after more than half a century, it’s time.

My hands aren’t as quick. My pace is slower. But my heart is full.

Retiring from Hudson’s Caps is bittersweet, but I’m proud of what I’ve built — and grateful to everyone who supported it.

Every cap in this final collection carries decades of experience, care, and tradition.

Thank you for being part of my journey.

“After a lifetime at the workbench, I’m ready to rest — grateful for every moment.”
